We only had 24 hours to explore Maine, which means we absolutely have to make plans for another (much longer) visit, because 24 hours in Maine is not nearly long enough! Kennebunkport was picturesque… honestly, I felt like we had jumped inside of a postcard when we drove over the bridge! This quaint town by the sea is a New England paradise… we immediately made our way to The Clam Shack, waited in line (it was so worth it,) and enjoyed our first lobster roll (get it with mayo and butter!) It was pure perfection on a homemade dinner roll. I had to fight Josh over the last few bites (note to self: get 2 lobster rolls next time!) We spent the rest of the afternoon visiting the shops, chatting with the incredibly friendly locals, and just taking in the beauty that is Kennebunkport. I cannot wait to go back for a longer stay!

After Kennebunkport, we headed to Portland for an evening of foodie adventures. A city by the sea full of urban vibes and coastal history, Portland makes an impression. The sound of seagulls, the views of lobster boats swaying in the water by the docks, their traps already empty from the day’s catch… it was an evening I will never forget. We started off at Duckfat, a small sandwich shop that leaves a big impact on your taste buds. Of course, we immediately ordered the Poutine, which we had been dreaming about for months. It did not disappoint, and you will definitely want to pair those delicious Belgian fries smothered in locally-sourced cheese curd and duck gravy with a hand-crafted soda or craft beer from a local brewery (anything from Allagash would be my pick!) Afterwards, we headed towards the water, and ended up meeting a local who recommended J’s Oyster as the best spot for fresh lobster at a great price. I ended up having my first full lobster experience by the water in Maine as the sun set over the water… it was a good night, and J’s was a great recommendation. When the sun disappeared beneath the horizon, we spent a few hours just getting lost in Portland. No plans, just walking from street to street trying to decide where to stop for one last drink before heading back to our hotel. We stumbled upon a small spot with a great vibe, made a toast with our glasses raised, and laughed together about the ridiculous argument we had found ourselves in as we roamed along the Portland streets. Sometimes getting lost in a new place might not be part of the plan, but learning to be open to wherever the night takes you can be good for the soul (even when you don’t know exactly where you are). Maine, you were a wonderful adventure… we’ll be back soon!
